our first sale

It's late June and our first tabletop sale went very well at Kilfinan Community Forest's Local Producers Summer Market in the Kames Recreational Hall. It was well attended by producers and customers, Russell was playing golf, Kate set up a stall which received many compliments and managed to sell a lot of stuff - bread, eggs, new potatoes, turnips, lettuces, taragon plants, parsley seedlings. Hardly anyone bought any herbs or spring greens which was unfortunate as I had a big bag of it so we and the hens will be eating greens for a while to come.
It was good to meet lots of other local producers, I feel quite encouraged and will go out and get to work planting and weeding right now

The Veggie Patch

January 2010
I feel that this blog is starting half way through so if I have the energy I will try to do last years as well.
The cold weather meant that I could not plant out all the fruit bushes and canes I had bought, I was becoming a bit unmotivated almost depressed at the enormity of the project I've taken on. A friend forced me into action yesterday so she dug the trenches, collected barrowloads of cow manure which has been decomposing for 9 months (hope it's long enough) it looks great - crumbly and full of worms. She forked it into the trenches then I planted 4 rows with 4 different varieties of raspberry 20 per row 40 cm apart. Unfortunately I have not yet constructed a support system or protection from the deer and rabbits. I put some straw round them as mulch.
Answer this question

I have inherited a 2 acre field on the shores of Loch Fyne and am thinking of starting a small business perhaps growing and selling fruit and veg. It has only been used for sheep for 20 + years. I'd be interested in any advice on how to get started eg. best way to get rid of grass etc, quickest wind breaks, cheapest water collection and irrigation, access to second-hand poly-tunnel, all these questions and more.....
