Monica and Piglets
Posted on Jul 10, 2009 at 07:33 AM
Monica stopped at 8 Piglets. It is her first litter and 8 is a good number as she now needs to learn how to look after them. If you would like any information or have a question please Email us on goldenriverfarms@btinternet.com.

Monica in Farrow
Posted on Jul 09, 2009 at 07:47 PM
One of our Sows called Monica (After the Mothering Law) has just started to farrow. So far she has produced 8 piglets and counting although most of our Sows have between 10 and 14 at each farrow, we shall have to wait and see.

Registering Pedigree Pigs
Posted on May 18, 2009 at 07:36 PM
Nearly had a heart attack! The Berkshire Pigs I had bought were listed on the BPA website as dead, deceased, legs in the air. I had purchased the Pigs over two months ago and still had not received the paperwork! My mind had all sorts of thoughts flashing through it, I had been conned, the Pigs were not Pedigree, I had interlopers!!
But all was well, with one phone call to the BPA, the dead had risen. The seller had not filled in the yearly return and therefore the animals are presumed dead!
Further to this I then found that the seller, although a member, had still not filed a transfer notice. We now have to wait 14 days whilst the BPA writes to the seller and asks them to pay for and register the transfer, if not the BPA override the proceedure.
While speaking to the BPA I inquired about our more recent purchase of two Gilts about six weeks ago. Oh No.o.o, dead, deceased, legs in the air and not transfered to boot!
What is the point in being a Registered Pedigree Pig Keeper if you are then going to ignore all the procedures?
My thoughts are;
- Are they not being registered to avoid the Transfer payment?
- How many dead, alive, err, dead, err, well you know what I mean, Pigs which should still be registered as alive?
- Therefore how many Pedigree Pigs are really out there?
- Therefore are the breeds actually at the danger levels we think they are?
Many thanks to the very helpful Lady at the BPA.
Paul Jackson.

Pig Ark design
Posted on May 15, 2009 at 08:29 PM
We produce our Pig Arks to the standard design with two end boards, curved steel roof and purlins. Recently we have looked at various ways to redesign this configuration and last month we built the various designs that have emerged and tested them. The test criteria were; build difficulty, strength, weight, cost and pig likability.
The following designs were built and tested:-
- Straw Ark with ply roof and stock fence wrap - Easy build, strong, heavy (can't move), low cost, pigs love it.
- Triangular Ark with fibre board roof and timber frame - Moderate build, strong, moderatly heavy, moderalty cost, pigs hated it ( the angle restricted their movements).
- Dutch Barn Ark with fibre board roof and timber frame - Hard build, strong, very heavy, high cost, pigs liked it.
- Traditional Ark with curved metal roof and timber frame - Easy build, very strong, moderatly heavy, low cost ( well ours are!), pigs like it.
- Reconstituted Plastic Ark - Easy build, rather weak (pigs bowed it when they laid against it), light weight (blows away in wind and floated in recent weather), high cost, pigs liked it.
We concluded that although the Staw Ark was the best in most aspects and most importantly the Pigs themselves loved it, it was the good old Traditional Pig Ark that won the day. It only really fell down on weight, but with the manual hand holds it can be moved fairly easily.
We have now drawn from this that we shall concentrate on our Traditional Range Pig Arks and will look at starting production of a Reconstituted Plastic Ark for its green qualities.

Pigs, Chickens and Banks
Posted on May 08, 2009 at 07:54 PM
What an odd Week! Started off with few Pig Ark orders, few Chicken or Hatching Egg orders and no response from any of our Banks about our Building Project Finance.
Then yesterday we are hit with orders for 12 Pig Arks, 24 Chicks to be grown on, rakes full of Araucana and Welsummer Hatching Egg orders. Today our main Bankers confirmed that they would be providing the finance for our Building Project and we can start next week.
I don't know why I worry. It always comes right in the end!
Help, where do I find the time now!!!
PS. The picture has nothing to do with this Blog, I just love this Photo I took on Derwent Water.

Hi, I have just started to make my own jams and chutneys and was wondering if anyone knows if I can re-use the jam jar lids. Also how long can I store my jams and chutneys for?
