Right at last the penny has drop with uploading photo's here, thanks to my good lady wife, real Homer doh! moment it has to be said.

Got down to the alloments yesterday  for the first time since the snow that we had here in Sussex. And emptying the kitchen scraps that had built up over the last week was the order of the day. I also decanted this big bag of grass that my friend Dan had dropped round.

I don't know what it is about making compost that I like so much but  it certainly seems to make perfect sense. I've become a bit of a pest badgering friends and neighbors for their food scraps and garden waste. But you can never ever make enough and feeding the soil with your own home made is one of the best feelings in the world. I now own six plastic bins I've either been given them or blagged  one or two from freecycle.

This lots nearly ready to go and I love sifting it and running my hands though the end product, and breathing in the earthy smells. Using it straight on the allotment or even mixing it up for my own potting compost certainly given one a warm smug glow.

I also had to sort out the netting over brassicas which had been flattened by  the recent snow. Although not before the pigeons had started to inflict damage on the now accessible  tops. Fingers cross they will recover.

Anyway nothing too ground breaking here just some insight into my growing world and why I bother with the" fiddly" practice to growing my own.

The Do Lectures

Back in September last year I was fortunate enough to be able to go to the Do Lectures held at fforest in West Wales near Cardigan; in fact I won my ticket in the 23sec Do Video competition.

What are the Do Lectures I hear you cry! Well started in 2008 by Howies founders David & Claire Hieatt with aim of bringing together a small band of "Doers" (around 80 people in total), both as speakers and attendees with the aim of inspiring all to do more. Issues that have been covered range from "Bread Matters" through to "Learning Through Play" and the speakers have been equally wide ranging.

To find out more watch the mini documentary I was asked to make of the 2009 Do Lectures. Then visit the website (links below) where more information can be found and all the talks from 2008/09 can be viewed in full. I think there will be much that will be of interest to the Rivercottage community.

You need to upgrade your Flash Player
