River Cottage Food Heroes
Hugh and the producers of the next River Cottage Spring series on Channel 4 are looking for more "Food Heroes" - people who are growing or producing their own food in surprising environments and in challenging ways. Are you, or is someone you know, producing wine against the odds on a 10th floor balcony? Have you managed to raise a family of goats on the roof of your city home?! If you think your project is out of the ordinary and will inspire others to start growing, producing or raising their own food in an extraordinary way then please get in touch. Add your story to this blog and if you'd like to comment on any of the postings please add it below.
If you’re interested in taking part in the programme then add a contact email address and phone number or email hero@keofilms.com.

Bonjour! Callum Train here in France for the year running http://www.chateaulebreuil.com not far from Bordeaux (one-off year of clan gatherings, events and stays). Despite the oppulent surroundings I am paradoxically living the good life sans l'argent or wages by way of raising chickens and living off a vegetable patch within the grounds (including the famous Marmande Tomatoe). I am making tea, coffee and confiture from forraged wild berries, I have a small rifle for shooting rabbit, squirrel, ragondin, pigeon etc and I also have access to nettles, vines, brambles, fig, apple, cherry and pear trees and have an old barrel press so some home-brews are on the cards too! If things get dire then there's a couple of horses to be had ;-) but I'm hoping to pursuade the owner to let me keep a pig for the summer and maybe a goat for cheese. I have plans for a "frogery" and a "snailery" too but whatever happens I plan to have some fun. I will be referring to River Cottage HQ for help and if the team fancies a trip to France I can put you up in the chateau (no charge of course!) Good luck to everyone - may your crops be bountiful.

We are a children's Centre based in one of the most deprived wards in London. Having watched Hugh's programmes on chicken welfare we felt that we had to do something to make a difference.
We created a community farm on a small patch of land at our centre. We are educating our families on the benefits of free range eggs and the joys of watching chickens do what they do naturally.
We have recently started an allotment project. We actively encourage families to participate in the sharing of planting and growing. Money is extremely short for our families and if we can encourage them to grow their own, and that it is affordable and healthy, we may be able to entice them away from the fast food shops on the high street.
We hope to introduce a potato growing project with in the tower block. By showing families that having little space doesnt mean you can not grow vegetables.
Our farm has been suscessful because we have been able to show the children that chickens don't come for KFC or wrapped in plastic at the supermarket. We have shown them that chickens are animals that need to cared for in order to supply us with quality eggs and quality meat.
This may not seem extraordinary to some, but for our families this is an amazing experience. Many of our families come from the tower block which over looks our centre. This is the only positive experience/contact that many of them will have with animals.
This is something that we would like to roll out to the rest of Edmonton and other deprived wards in London.
We would love to be one of your Heroes.

Obviously Hugh takes a keen interest and involvement in everything happening at the Canteen, but he does allow me a fair amount of room for creativity, which is very important. He is also not shy with the criticism, but then I think that’s something we all need from time to time, and sometimes I manage to change his mind about a dish. He is very open-minded and that is really rewarding for me. I wouldn't be able to do it on my own though - a good kitchen is all about team work and I have a great team.
